The GAPABA Public Service Committee Presents

    The Perks of Public Service

    (Yes - those exist!)

    Wed | Aug. 4, 2021 | 6 PM ET

Via Zoom & GAPABA Facebook Livestream

The GAPABA Public Service Committee hopes to inspire the next generation of public service leaders. This event highlights the path that Judge Justin Anand (U.S. Magistrate Judge, Northern District of Georgia), Nekia Hackworth Jones (Atlanta Regional Director, U.S. Securities & Exchange Commission) and Sean Young (Legal Director, ACLU of Georgia) took from lucrative Big Law practices to public service leaders. We examine why the choose to go into public service in hopes of inspiring the next generation to do the same.

We Love BuHi is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization committed to preserving the multicultural identity of Atlanta's Buford Highway, the epicenter of an evolving South, where immigrant communities thrive for generations. We Love BuHi launched the project "Feeding Families of Buford Highway" in early 2020 during the pandemic, when food insecurity hit hundreds of families. Many immigrant families on Buford Highway are essential workers, and COVID caused many breadwinners to lose their jobs. Communities were also marginalized because of lack of transportation and English fluency. With the spike in need for access to food, We Love Buhi committed to feeding 500 children and families with nutritious food every month for a full year, impacting nearly 22,000 individuals in 2021.

Han C. Choi Scholarship

From his Law Firm, Ballard Spahr

Han C. Choi, who served as Managing Partner of Ballard Spahr's Atlanta Office, led the firm's Korea Initiative, and was respected locally and nationally for his extraordinary work on behalf of Asian American lawyers and students, died March 26, 2018.

Mr. Choi, 52, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in April 2017. He was determined to maintain his successful law practice, as well as his active civic and social life, for as long as possible. In the year since his diagnosis, Mr. Choi traveled with his wife, Catherine, and their three children. He was honored by civic organizations he helped build and grow, assisted clients with their business needs, and—as always—participated in activities that enriched the lives of others.

... "Han was a leader, a teacher, a mentor, a friend. He was all of those things in one," Ballard Spahr Associate Stephanie Kim said. "He truly cared about his clients, some of whom became his closest friends. And he listened to others because he didn't believe that his way was always the right way. Even in the most pressure-filled situation, he remained calm and looking for solutions. That had a quiet, uplifting effect on everyone around him.”
