TOPICS OF DISCUSSION

What would you do

  • What are the right questions to ask firm leadership or assigning attorney/partner to get additional information?
  • How do you ask for information to make decisions without pushing too hard?
  • This is the first time I’ve slowed down in a long time - is this a time to recharge, or should I be pushing to survive (before it’s too late)?
  • How would you answer “how’s it going” when a partner or client asks?

Planning Ahead

  • Not every new development or fact deserves a stressful reaction, but what are important “signs” that signal your employment is at risk? (i.e., When a firm has no response? When they say “xyz”? When certain teams/partners are let go?) What should you look out for so you aren’t blindsided?
  • If I feel like I need a plan b “just in case”, what are reasonable steps I can take? (i.e., update resume?) Is preparing a plan “b” the best way to go, or is should I double down on “plan a”?
  • What are factors you should evaluate when considering whether to look for another position in this environment? (i.e., from outside counsel to in-house; lateral from firm-to-firm)

Lessons from the Recession

  • What are some of the most important lessons you learned from the last recession?
  • What is the right attitude/frame of mind we should adopt as we move forward in this process?
  • How do you project calmness, confidence, and competency when you are stressed and - frankly - desperate to get hours?
  • There is opportunity in crisis - what’s one thing new lawyers should take advantage of during this time? What are the signs/signals of opportunities we should pay attention for?
